Fly the Wing
Published in Paperback by Iowa State Univ Pr (Trd) (December, 1990)
Authors: James L. Webb and Jim Webb
Average review score:

If I had only one book
As a Check Captain for a major airline I have to stay up on procedures and techniques. This book has been my constant reference source for over 18 years. Every time I pick up my dog-eared copy I am astounded at the wealth of information that is contained between its covers. It is a postgraduate course in flying in the real world and should be on every pilot's bookshelf. I recommend it to all the new hire First Officers I work with. The other book that belongs on your shelf is Robert Bucks "Weather Flying".

How to fly large airplanes and pass check rides
"Be your own greatest critic. Accept each flight as a challenge. . . . Work to your maximum ability; endeavor at all times to fly clearances exactly; stay right on your heading and course and altitude; try to fly so smoothly that the passengers will never know when you've made a mistake. You will know when you've flown a good flight, and your self-satisfaction will surpass any complement that may be given you."

Where 'Stick and Rudder' is perfect for a Cub student 'Fly The Wing' is perfect for the SAAB 340 or B-757 student. It's one of my most dog-eared books, as I try to read it before every training session. Covers in detail all major procedures required to master handling a large airplane. Written by a master who learnt to fly with a barnstormer, earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses flying B-24's, and retired as an airline check airman with 35,000 hours and 500 students taught. If you are going from a Cessna to an RJ, buy this book now.

First class tutor for beginner or advanced pilot
Advice and tutoring from an airline pilot. From basics to advanced theory and practical hints for piloting turbine powered aircraft. Should be read by any pilot upgrading to jet aircraft and on the bookshelf of all serious pilots.

Found Lives: A Collection of Found Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Gibbs Smith Publisher (April, 1998)
Author: James Nocito
Average review score:

Unique perspective on old photographs created by Nocito.
In Found Lives, James Nocito has devised a unique method of utilizing his many old photographs, either given to him or collected at various estate and tag sales. Through careful scrutiny of the elements in the photograph (the people, expressions, angles, shadows, background, etc.) Nocito has created new and imaginitive lives and situations for the subjects. In one, an outdoor scene under tall trees, a smiling man holds an equally smiling woman upside down in his arms. "Everyone said poor Aunt Constance was made of patience, married to a man like Roscoe. The ladies in her Bible group prayed that there'd be a moment's rest for her someday...."

The book is divided into sections, with headings such as "Family Album," "Talking Pictures," and "Love." Under "Children," Nocito has reproduced a picture of a laughing child on a back porch, along with a quote from Anne Cameron, "A Child of Happiness always seems like an old soul living in a new body...she smiles, then the sun lights up the world." Each photograph provides a little vignette into the imagined lives of men, women, and children in the past, bucolic scenes which may recall photographs we may have, stored away in our own attics or old shoe boxes, forgotten, until James Nocito revives and revitalizes them for us.

A nostalgic treat for the heart and soul.
No matter what your age, you will be touched by the compelling words and images brought to life by James Nocito. With every turn of the page, one feels as if they have discovered a private family treasure. It evokes tender emotions, sadness, wonder, and joy. It satisfies the need we have to connect with our past, and find wisdom in the lives of others. This is a wonderful gift that will grow more precious with time.

A visually exciting, charming , and thoughtful collection.
What a treat to come across this book! I am neither a photography buff nor someone steeped in nostalgia, but Nocito's eye for snapshots from an earlier time and his ear for the stories that might go with them is astonishing. The lure is in both the details and in the window it provides to an earlier time and place, one we all share on the level of memories that are visceral. The pictures are funny and startling and genuine. They tell us how much of our lives have changed and how much they have stayed the same over the past decades. A real delight and one that bears repeating. Unlike other "picture" books, this one offers its delights over and over. Great gift, especially to yourself.

French Aircraft of the First World War
Published in Hardcover by Flying Machines Press (June, 1997)
Authors: James J. Davilla and Arthur M. Soltan
Average review score:

XXL book
This is XXL book not only in its size and weight, but mostly for the contents. I wish I had similar on other air services of Great War. No doubt is worth the money paid...because it accumulates huge amount of systematic information which helps in orientation among sometimes confusing mess of names and abbreviations of French air service. All planes (even prototypes and concepts) have at last one photograph. For example Nieuports are covered on 70 large pages, SPADs on 50 - monographs of its own. Taking in account the difficulties caused by destroying many of original sources it must take years for the team to produce it.

superb aircarft reference work
This is without a doubt the finest study of French military aircraft during World War One to be published, and will become a classic reference. It presents a very detailed organizational account of the units of the French Air Service, and then a complete detailed account of over 400 aircraft types hat were flown. More than 900 photos, over 180 three-view drawings in 1/72 and 1/144 scales, 25 pages of color art work by Alan Durkota of 56 different aircraft. 1997, new hard bound, color laminated cover, 9 x 12, glossy page stock, 618 pp. FLYING MACHINES PRESS series

An Inspiring Testimony
This is truly an honest and inspiring testimony of amother's experience with prenatal diagnosis and termination. Itchallenges the notion that God would never guide a woman to choosetermination when a genetic anomaly is prenatally diagnosed. Mrs. Lyon is open about how she struggled with guilt and depression, but has now found a healthy way to cope with her pain. It should be read by any Christian person put in this position who is struggling with a life-changing decision.

From the Bones Out (The James Dickey Contemporary Poetry Series)
Published in Hardcover by University of South Carolina Press (February, 2000)
Author: Marisa De Los Santos
Average review score:

from the bones out
These are rare, beautiful poems. Her images breathtaking. I love this book.

Grace, Lightness and Movement, too
Octavio Paz said once that to read a poem is to let "words enter through our ears, appear before our eyes, disappear in contemplation." This is what Marissa de los Santos offered us. And in its various incarnations. In her poems, the writer also allows the words to enter our eyes, appear in contemplation and to never disappear from within.

Deft Grace
Lightness and grace permeate the words in this book. Throughout, the reader can sense a warm heart and compassionate eye. A joy to read for observations on family, on history, on nostalgia, on desire...the poems create a beautiful presence and experience for the attentive reader. I thank the poet for her words.

Flash MX: Advanced ActionScript
Published in Paperback by Delmar Learning (05 August, 2002)
Authors: James L. Mohler and Nishant Kothary
Average review score:

Comprehensive but cold
This is a quite thorough book that picks up where Mohler's intro book leaves off. It's written as if a Flash instructor literally transcribed his class presentations, which is good and bad. Explanations are long, but at times are wordy and dull. It will remind you at times of tedious homework assignments and drills. There is quite a bit of slogging through pages with only two or three long paragraphs with no Flash code. That's not bad, but it's a sign that an editor probably could have tightened up the writing here.

Also, these authors need to lighten up and learn to write! The tone they take is often "academic", with all the snobbiness and overuse of big words and long sentences that comes with that. Often it's clear that one or the other of the two authors has written a particular passage--and there are some awful clunkers there. Better instructors and writers strive for a more human, friendly tone.

Also, there are coding techniques that seem to me not to reflect current or common Flash coding practice, like the frequent use of the eval() function and the set() function (which I've *never* seen other advanced Flash authors use).

One good thing: the two long projects in the book are kind of neat, definately better than in some other big Flash books.

Great book even for beginners
I'm a beginning flash user, and I picked this book up as a follow up to Mohler's first book. Even though it explores advanced scripting, the explanations are clear enough for beginners like myself to understand. I actually understand OOP because of the great dog class example. There are some really great examples on the cd-rom. It's so helpful to have an actual Flash file to play with, so I can see exactly how it works.

outstanding book
a great book for any flash student with superb examples . a must for anyone connected to computers..

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall PTR (15 August, 1998)
Authors: James O. Wilkes and Stacy G. Bike
Average review score:

compatible with any classroom text
I think that this book is an indispensable guide for fluid mechanics. It is easy to understand and it lets you progress with your pace with its solved examples. And one can excel in fluid mechanics by solving the suggesred problems of the book. This book not only helps you to understand the concept mathematically but gives the physical meanings of the problems.

This book is concise, clear and easy to understand.
I have a good chance to study this course with Prof. Wilkes at Petroleum and petrochemical college, Chulalonkorn University in Thailand. This book is very useful for me because it's easy to understand and clear in every step. For example, some part of the fluid mechanics, I think it's very difficult for me to understand in the past(in bachelor's degree) but when I study this book, it make me clear and easy. I think this book is suitable for the beginner than the others that I met before.

A definitive fluid mechanics book for Chemical Engineers
Here is a book that is concise, comprehensive and to the point. The authours are meticulous with the math and present a wide variety of chemical engineering applications of fluid mechanics. The book is surprisingly easy to follow and is highly recommended for any systematic study of the subject. The language is clear and succinct and the layout is pleasing.

Fuel Cell Systems Explained
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (April, 2003)
Authors: James Larminie and Andrew Dicks
Average review score:

Down to earth
I'm a first year science student and found this novel very helpful for a science report on the hydrogen fuel cell. High recommend!

A great starting point
This book is a must read for anyone wanting to get into the fuel cell industry. I am a graduate researcher at a fuel cell lab and after borrowing my copy several colleagues have purchased their own. It gives a complete survey of the major fuel cell technologies and additionally covers many of related issue effecting fuel cell commercialization such as fuel storage. This text is very suited for a undergraduate course in fuel cells.

Encompassing. Helpfully Technical--Yet Also Very Readable.
Fuel cells including their ranging balance of plant, are quite difficult to write about in usefully technical fashion, because the authors must have expertise across so many various disciplines: i.e. chemistry, engineering, materials, thermodynamics, systems theory, etc.

Yet Larminie and Dicks are clearly up to the task, and we are the more fortunate for it. They've done the trick of not only writing a technically-inclined and broadly encompassing work for a fast-growing field (one that's much in need of such books now)--but they've also done it in a way that's surprisingly quite readable.

This book could serve as an excellent self-instruction text for those new to fuel cells, or as a very helpful text for experts in particular fuel cell types who wish to brush up on other systems. And it could be used in any university level class. Should I be pursuaded to lend my copy briefly to someone I know well, then I shall also take care to ensure that I get it back promptly!

It is quite reasonably up to date and highlights for instance Basic Principles; Efficiencies and Voltages; PEMFCs, AFCs, PAFCs; MCFCs; SOFCs; various possible fuel types; compressors, turbines, fans, blowers (etc); delivering FC power, among other topics.

Remarkably, this book even happened to cover a very wide swath of topics that are of a personal interest--despite their diversity. I might suggest more discussion on just a few quite developing topics like sodium borohydride as an H2 storage/generation medium. Yet I note too that near-term emerging topics like that (and much farther off, potential blue sky topics like carbon nanotubes) are likely best left for a future edition of this excellent book.

In sum, I highly recommend this book. It's usefully technical yet readable, essential for fuel cell enthusiasts. Though rather dear, it is I believe well worth the price...

Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (McGraw-Hill/Irwin Series in Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate)
Published in Unknown Binding by McGraw Hill Text (January, 2004)
Authors: James P. Lewis and Richard A. Brealey
Average review score:

A little too detailed for beginners
The financial concepts are explained very nicely. Though it is my first finance book i can go through it without much difficulty or extra help. However there are still some drawbacks need to be noticed:

1. Need more charts and graphics to explain the concepts, ie: when explaining the DU PONT System, i think the pyramid structure can be illustrated so as to state a whole concept, not only fragments

2. Too many examples

3. This book is too detailed in both relevant and irrelevant matters

Still, I think it is a good book.

I own Principles of Corporate Finance (5th ed.)
If possible, please tell me the difference between this book (Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Richard Brealey) and Principles of Corporate Finance by Brealey and Myers. I currently own the 5th edition of Principles; having worn the book down with constant thumbing, I am looking for a replacement.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Excellent book for very beginners
I and my friends(with no business background) are studying corporate finance by ourselves using this book and all of us are very satisfied with the book so far.

The concepts are explained very clearly(even kindly) and sample tests with complete solutions are very useful. The book also has solutions for selected end-of-the chapter problems and I enjoy mini cases which help me apply the concepts to the practice in detail.

I had tried other finance books before and most of them were not clear in explaining concepts and a bit difficult for me(my major was chemistry). I think that this book is probably the easiest and the best book to begin with for starters in finance.

The Gatehouse Heaven: Poems
Published in Paperback by Sarabande Books (June, 1998)
Author: James Kimbrell
Average review score:

Kimbrell is good
This is a good book, but short. I went to one of his readings at a local university and ever since I have loved his poetry. He has a new book coming out in 2004. I recommend this book to Poetry lovers.

The Great Kimbrell
This is a great book, although it is rather short. I read it a few times. I went to one of his readings at a local university and he is a great guy, his poetry is well written, it is not five star work yet.

Brilliant
James Kimbrell's poetry exhales with the perfect balance of expertise and ease. There's nothing contrived or stuffy about his poems. The voice is significantly soothing, pure and unequivocal. And each new poem has a mysterious and revitalizing significance.
